At IASDR 2017,
Design Looks Forward

Taking place in North America for the first time, this year’s conference saw design and innovation converge.

For the first time since its founding in 2005, the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR) took its conference to the US, hosting four days of keynotes and events at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Focused on the possibilities of design and design research in the century ahead, Re:Research brought a diverse roster of thought leaders and industry veterans to the stage, including Bob Schwartz, General Manager at GE Healthcare; Cynthia E. Smith, Curator of Socially Responsible Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; and Don Norman, Director of the Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego and former VP at Apple.

LPK also played host during the week, holding an evening event, Urban + Design Cincinnati, featuring presentations by Jerry Kathman, Chairman and former CEO of LPK, and Bryan Goodpaster, Senior Creative Director, Trends, at LPK. The agency also welcomed guests for a morning talk by Professor Lou Yongqi, PhD, Dean of the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University in China, who spoke to the dual importance of design in the era ahead. “Design-driven innovation breaks into science and technology, as well as social innovation,” he said. “We are solving for complexity, ambiguity and uncertainty in the future.”

This year’s IASDR Conference gave the global design community the chance to discover Cincinnati first-hand. “Not only is Cincinnati the birthplace of branding and consumer research, it’s a hub for contemporary design and innovation,” Kathman explained. “This town is a bastion of creative culture, and it’s only growing—an apropos setting for this year’s IASDR Conference.”
